Rationale

1 in 4 children in America grow up without knowing how to read. Those children, in turn, become adults, who become part of the growing 14% of adults in America that are illiterate. Besides illiteracy in itself being a problem, when you have adults that cannot proficiently communicate, it causes gaps. 90 percent of high school drop outs in the United States are on welfare. Money is now being delegated towards individuals under the poverty line, when it could be pushed towards programs that will help educate illiterate adults, making them much more of an asset to society. Illiteracy goes hand in hand with poverty and crime. 85 percent of juveniles that face trial are indeed functionally illiterate. Money is being wasted towards trials, and housing inmates, when it can be put towards improving the issue with illiteracy, especially in our adults. Illiterate children turn into illiterate adults; this creates an ongoing cycle which proves very hard to get out of, especially for low income families.

In order for this cycle to stop, we need more government funding for free programs that tutor illiterate adults. These newly trained adults can go out into the world and guide the adolescent’s toward a path of understanding. The better a person’s literacy skills, the better chance they have at finding a good job. Better programs are the beginning of an adverse cycle, which would slowly reverse the illiteracy cycle, and bring it down.

I chose this add because books are a big part of being literate. Not only books, but tutors who can effectively teach illiterate adults on how to read, write, and communicate properly for better advancement in society. I want this ad to be placed on trains and buses that run through lower income neighborhood because they are the ones who need, and can benefit from it the most.
